Bioethics and Design of Clinical Trials (PM_08)
The aim of the course is the understanding of epidemiology and epidemiological planning, as well as the importance of the science of Bioethics in modern society. Additionally, the course aims at the estimation of the ways in which ethical values are an integral part of the practice of medicine and the provision of health care, both at the clinical and organizational levels. At the same time, the course aims to familiarize the student with the principles of clinical research and the regulatory framework of clinical trials as well as the formulation and writing of research protocols and the understanding, planning and conduct of clinical studies. The basic theories, concepts and models of bioethics are presented in detail and students learn to analyze, plan and act based on the principles governing bioethics. Students are also introduced to contemporary bioethical problems concerning the beginning and end of human life, as well as its duration. The new possibilities in reproduction and transplant treatments, the ethics of Pharmacogenomics, euthanasia etc. will be examined. Students should be able to recognize the complexity of bioethical issues, relate bioethical dilemmas to the human existential quest, and approach developments in biomedical technology and genetic engineering. Finally, students will be informed about the interdisciplinary approach to bioethical issues always in relation to the good of health.
